This study aims to investigate the process of appearance and expansion of a potential negative form ‘-eul su eobs-da’ and to reveal the correlation between expansion of ‘-eul su eobs-da’ and English-Korean translation. I examined the process of expansion of ‘-eul su eobs-da’ from the 18th century, when ‘-eul su eobs-da’ was appeared for the first time, to the present. I couldn t find out the correlation with translation for the formation of ‘-eul su eobs-da’, but I showed that the translation of ‘cannot’ into Korean affected the fact that the use of ‘-eul su eobs-da’ has expanded since the Gabo Reform of 1894. I confirmed that ‘-eul su eobs-da’ was selected for the translation of ‘cannot’ by comparing Cheolloyeokjeong, where the proportion of ‘-eul su eobs-da’ was increased outstandingly for the first time, with the orignal text The Pilgrim s Progress. And I concluded that English-Korean translated texts were increased rapidly in 1940-50s due to political change. Thus, ‘-eul su eobs-da’ was used in similar proportion with ‘mos’ negative in 1960s.
