Are cellulosic feedstocks for biofuel production a promising alternative considering economic and environmental aspects? A regional model of agricultural production in the watershed is constructed to analyze the economic and environmental impacts of cellulosic feedstock production. The model has a multi-region structure with various crop production activities and a high level of spatial details that previous studies do not consider. SWAT, a biophysical simulation model, is used to simulate the effects of feedstock production on soil and water quality in the Le Sueur River Watershed (LRW) in south-central Minnesota. Findings indicate that intensive corn production expands to whole watershed and more regions are covered with high levels of nutrient losses as corn stover production increases.
