The objective of this paper is to help a reader select the best translation and to provide guidance on improvement of translation quality through comparison analysis between two representative Korean translations of one of the most famous Chinese pieces in Korea, “The True Story of Ah Q” written by Lu Xun. This paper takes ‘equivalence of coherence’ to be an important criterion for evaluation, and analyzes and compares two translated works by focusing on where language and cultural differences cause the wide gulf in understanding between ST and TT readers. In addition, it adopts an approach of classifying the translation methfys of culture-bound lnsis into four types: annotation, insertion of tnslual intervention, naturalization and borrowing, and nsamining each methfy based on its own standard. After the analysis, it revealed that the reader of TT2, with lack of background information, has difficulty in keeping coherence even though the work provides a lot of explanations and annotations. Therefore, the latter is relatively appropriate for those who have abundant knowledge in Chinese characters and wish to have an in-depth understanding of the literary work.
