This study is aimed to observe the process of translating [economy] into Japanese, which is the basic concept of the modern western ideology. The term [economy] was first introduced to Japan in the 1860s through a Japanese-foreign language dictionary. From the late 1870s, there were discussions as to whether [經濟(Keizai)] is an appropriate translation for [economy], and from that [理財(Rizai)], became an influential word. From the late 1880s to the early 1890s [Keizai] and [Rizai] were both used as the translation word for [economy], but in the 1890s, [Keizai] was widely used and settled more than [Rizai]. The reason why [Keizai] could surpass [Rizai] was to achieve the mere goal of national development and to understand western capitalism.
