The purpose of the present paper is to identify the cultureme translation strategies employed in film translation from Korean into English. To this end, “King and the Clown,” a film directed by Lee Jun-ik in 2005, was chosen and analyzed based on four cultureme categories established by the author: proper nouns, society-specific terms, idiomatic phrases, and puns. After the analysis, it was found that various types of translation strategies such as localization, foreignization, explicitation, omission, and enhancement of politeness were used according to the translator s ‘arbitrary strategies, which shall guarantee the coherence. Furthermore, the reduction, which had been believed as a common phenomenon in film translation, was not observed in cultureme translation in this study, and accordingly, follow-up studies shall be conducted with other films to secure an enlarged corpus and to assure the reliability of this research.
