Many information booklets and brochures regarding Gwangju are translated into English for foreign visitors. These serve as a good indicator for measuring Gwangju’s globalization efforts and what improvements need to be made. Any English-speaker will note several grammatical errors and awkward phrases in official introductions of the city and its culture. Moreover, most of the English publications issued by the city government reveal serious problems in content, in which historical facts are often either erroneous or exaggerated. If the city wants to do a better job introducing and advertising itself to the world community, it should first establish its identity and cultural vision more clearly by consolidating all the diverse images into one. At the same time, thorough research should be carried out on the local history and culture. This will improve the accuracy of English translation. The IT and digital technology training programs for the interpreter corps of the city are in the process of implementing, cannot succeed unless the problem of establishing the city’s identity is resolved.
