This paper aims at preparing a practical criterion-the extended definition of translation-to include concrete translated materials into the description of translation history. In this context, taking such factors as translated unit, the writing system used in translation, direction of translation, substitution of verbal signs into consideration, the author has specified the definition of translation. As a result he has reached a conclusion on the definition of translation that translation is the transferring process or its result of the meaning contained in textual materials not less than a word in one language(SL), whether it be written or spoken, by equivalent textual materials in another written language. It is not necessary that the writing system of the target language be required, and the target language be the translator s native tongue, and the substitution of verbal signs be asked. From the viewpoint of this line of definition, he has included some materials into translated materials of Korean translation history. They are proper nouns written in Chinese characters, Chinese texts originating from the original Korean spoken text, Seokdok-Gugyeol(釋讀口訣) texts, Seokeuiruy(釋義類) texts, and Korean texts translated from Chinese.
