Metaphor expresses meanings in non-literal and implicit ways, emphasizing the original meaning or enhancing expressions. Therefore, those who translate metaphor inevitably face the questions: how to deal with the form and meaning of the source text(ST), how to maintain the function and impact of metaphoric expressions in the target text(TT), and how to change or preserve those expressions of ST in TT. When shift does not take place, in other words, if metaphor of ST is preserved in TT, it can be said that the readers of ST and TT share common background knowledge and can understand the meaning of ST metaphor without any trouble. This paper discusses various cases of Russian-Korean translation of metaphor when ST metaphors did not change in TT and tries to show what kind of knowledge structure or common knowledge is shared between Russian and Korean readers, using the frame of conceptual metaphor.
