The purpose of this study is to investigate the concept of faithfulness in translation of short stories from Arabic into Korean. Many scholars agree that faithfulness is a determining factor that can distinguish good quality translations from those that are not. These scholars define good translations as those that are faithful to the source language text and the purpose of the text, while at the same time ensuring readability to the target language readers. This study calls for an extended concept of faithfulness for literary translation. Under the new definition, faithful translation must satisfy the following three criteria. First, the translator must be able to convey not only the denotations of the words and sentences but also their connotations. Second, the translator must be faithful to the target language. Last, the translator must be faithful to the target reader. Most importantly, faithful translation should take into account the culture of the target reader as well. Literary translation is three dimensional which differentiates it from other types of translations. The language may evolve and the time and space may differ. For these reasons, literary translation must be carried out in ways that cater to the requirements of readers from a wider and more complex scope of social groups. The selection of words and expressions in literary translation should be evaluated under these new criteria taking all these factors into account.
