This study sets out to investigate purpose-driven Explicitation in translated texts by looking into the translation of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Explicitation is currently attracting considerable interest from translation scholars. Since the concept of Explicitation in translation was first introduced by Vinay and Darbelnet, it has been classified and categorized in many different ways. Explicitation has been often viewed as one of the translation strategies needed to disambiguate a source text and facilitate its understanding for the target text readers. In the translation of the texts that intend to make an appeal to the readership, however, Explicitation is employed to maximize the language function. The source text analyzed in this study consists of deeply-touching short stories. They aim to give lessons to readers by drawing active response from them. In order for the translated text to achieve this goal, Explicitation takes place in the following four ways; providing background information, repeating heartbreaking elements, giving a detailed description of the situation and control the pace that the story progresses. Purpose-driven Explicitation can be a unique part of translation phenomena to make operative texts more inspiring and emotionally touching for the target text readers.
