Need for Conducting Training Program for Court Interpreters

Since the beginning of researches on interpreting studies, researches have been mainly focusing on conference interpreting. However, community interpreting, which refers to interpretation services provided by public institutions such as police stations, immigration offices, social welfare institutions, courts, schools, emerged as a new field of studies in the 1990s thanks to rapid globalization. Though community interpreting requires a high level of speciality similar to the level of conference interpreting, researches on this topic have not been actively conducted so far, particularly in Korea. Against this backdrop, this paper proposes a need for establishing training programs for court interpreters. In order to secure the quality of court interpreting service, this paper presents the concept of quality assessment in community interpreting compared with conference interpreting as well as the quality assessment models developed by previous researchers. Then, this paper observes the current situation of court interpreting in Korea and proposes a contrastive research with the situation in the United States to develop an efficient training program to nurture court interpreters.
