In the era of globalization, as the rapid trans-border exchange of information has become pervasive, the awareness of and the demand for simultaneous interpretation are increasing. Contrary to the general assumption, however, education methods to help produce competent interpreters are limited. Till now, professional interpreters have been entrusted to teach interpretation in most institutions and universities, transferring their accumulated experience and knowledge to interpreter-trainees. Those responsible for interpreter training rely mostly on traditional teaching methods in their class. However, it is not information itself, but the ability to deal with incoming information in a flexible and creative manner, that is important in this informatization era. This ability is also one of the most important qualities for competent interpreters. In an attempt to find ways to train trainees as an interpreter who can meet the call of the times, this paper intends to propose a social constructivist teaching method in which student-centered learning takes place as an alternative to the traditional one. Thus, a mock conference is suggested as one of most efficient and practical teaching methods to embody a social constructivist approach to interpreter training. What s more, to maximize the effect of interpreter education, this paper suggests a mixed and complementary interpreter training model with the aspects of both traditional and constructivist teaching methods.
