The paper attempts to examine the translations of proper names in literary books. Drawing on the classification of Nord(2003), the paper categorizes three basic types of proper names: names explicitly referring to the real world of the author and original addresses, names implicitly referring to the real world of the author and original addressees, and names referring to fictitious characters. Contrary to the general concept that proper names are not translated, the paper tries to provide the evidences of the mediation by translators in translating proper names. Though limited, the paper comes to a conclusion that translators mediate the source texts by translating proper names in different forms depending upon their roles in the target texts.
