An Analysis of Conjunction Errors of Interpretation Learners : A case study of French-Korean simultaneous interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation (SI) is a complex and multifaceted process in that it is composed of various cognitive activities such as listening and analysis of the source text (ST), speech production, as well as coordination. The major difficulties of the SI lie in the fact that the interpreter has to speak and listen at the same time, and is constrained by the speech speed of the speaker. Students often find difficulties when they try to interpret the whole information contained in the ST and thus make errors while interpreting. One of the tendencies observed in SI performances of interpreters in training is that they often add conjunctions to make the message they are conveying clear and coherent. However, it should be emphasized that inappropriate use of the connectives disturb the comprehension of the text by the audience because these connectives make the overall context incoherent. The aim of this research is to observe the appropriateness of the conjunctions added by student interpreters in their SI process. To that end, the types and the number of the added conjunctions will be analyzed. In addition, the appropriateness of the connectives will be determined in terms of the coherence of the SI. The types of the conjunctions will be defined through the review of literatures on text linguistics.
