This paper introduces a pilot study on the educational effectiveness of study journal writing. 28 students at a graduate school of translation and interpretation were asked to keep a study journal twice a week and submit it weekly for three months. At the end, they responded to survey questions regarding the effective use of study journal writing. Students have kept daily assignments, subject research, useful expressions, glossary, difficulties, feelings, progress, strengths and weaknesses in a journal. The analysis of their journals and survey results indicates that keeping a study journal is a big step toward a student-centered learning mechanism, in which students set the goals tailored to their specific needs, conduct a self-assessment to control the pace and style of their learning, and so forth. In particular, the survey reveals that students reduce their stress by expressing and releasing their feelings writing a journal. For these reasons, keeping a study journal should be strongly recommended by an instructor for students effective learning through greater individualization and autonomous learning.
