번역투 배제를 위한 교육 수단으로서 시역의 유용성에 대한 연구

Sight Interpretation as a Pedagogical Tool for Teaching Translation

The aim of this paper is to show that sight interpretation exercise can be a useful pedagogical tool for teaching translation. One of the difficulties experienced by students learning translation, as expressed by the students themselves, stems from the fact that they are unable to totally separate themselves from the ST, and thus some traces of ST can still be found in the TT translation. The traces of ST include words or phrases or sentence structures that appear as word-to-word transliterations of SL in TL, which often sound unnatural and hinder understanding of the ST message. By incorporating sight interpretation exercises as a part of the translation process, students will be able to successfully shut linguistic interference of SL during the conversion process and produce a TT that is natural and coherent to TL readers. This article shows that sight interpretation exercise is especially a helpful tool in the translation of words whose counterparts are not readily available. In addition, sight interpretation proved to be beneficial in cutting down the time for editing while enhancing the readability of the translation.
