A Little Thought on the Methods of Translation and Interpretation

While arguments have been continued over the translation methods of metaphrase and paraphrase, some folks assert literal translation to be the right method while others insist on free translation. Despite diversified opinions expressed like this, we can say that an idealistic translation strategy does not exist and that the most appropriate translation will be determined in accordance with the proposed function of target text and its translation situation. To those scholars who have tried with the hermeneutical approach in translation, a translation meant an interpretation and a translator was only a mediator between two texts. Interpretation in the theory of hermeneutics was not to revive the grammatical and lexical meanings of the source text as existed, but was to re-express(rexprimer) them perfectly. In one way with regard to translation steps, G.E. Miram of Russia(2004: 78) points out that a translator comes to use two methods of transformational translation and denotative one, which are respectively correspondent to a word-for-word translation and to a free translation. On the other hand, interpretation, which is a shift method of message by oral statement, is also being made in the framework of word-for-word translation and free translation. It is divided into a simultaneous interpretation and a consecutive interpretation by time lag and also divided into a speech interpretation and a conversation interpretation by the number of speakers involved.
