Pedagogical Considerations to Improve Reformulation Competency in English-Korean Translation

We often come across so-called translationese which lowers readability and acceptability of the translation. By letting translator trainees have some glance at translation as TT readers, this study intends to see what kinds of changes they make before and after their translation. Six translation trainees are asked to translate paragraphs from Building Wealth written by Lester C. Thurow. Before they translate, they discuss and are informed of the general background information. After translating, they read the published Korean translation and discuss what seems to be out of the TL convention and why. Afterwards, they translate the paragraphs again and data was collected on what were the differences. Results show that translation trainees tried to distance themselves form ST and reformulate TT to meet the TL convention by changing forms of ST, clarifying conjunctions that was not specified in ST, changing words, and fixed phrases, using fewer pronouns and clarifying what they referred to, converting passive sentences to active ones, and streamlining and repositioning modifiers. Analysis of the data and discussions of trainee translators clearly showed that they do not have strong awareness of readability or acceptability of their translations even when they translate into their native language. It was also clear that they can have better understanding if they have structured experience as TT readers.
