The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences between dubbing (the shift in mode from speech to speech) and subtitling (the shift in mode from speech to writing) from the point of politeness. The polarized views on dubbing/subtitling might suggest the relationship of textuality, particularly intentionality and acceptability. This paper sketches the theoretical view of Brown & Levinson(1987) and Beaugrande & Dressler(1981), analyze examples from dubbing and subtitling of a Korean-into-Japanese translation of [The winter love song], which reflects different aspects of politeness and compare these with the Korean script. This paper also identifies the research questions/hypotheses: a)dubbing reflects far more TT politeness, b)subtitling involves far more ST politeness⇒a)dubbing reflects far more TT acceptability, b) subtitling involves far more ST intentionality. In this process, it is emphasized that the translator, as an intercultural communicator, should fully understand the differences between source and target languages in expressing various social relationships.
