Retranslation is a complex social cultural phenomenon involving diverse variables such as the relation between the original and the translation, the creativity and the subjectivity of the translator and socio-cultural factors of the target language culture. However, there have been little descriptive studies on the scale and the pattern of the retranslation in Korea neither on the homogeneity nor the heterogeneity of different retranslations. This study attempts to understand the general background of the retranslation and the interactions among its surrounding variables. A restrictive number of samples makes the investigation into the cause-effect of the variables difficult, but some conclusions in terms of textual and extra-textual factors are presented.
