중학생의 과학 흥미에 대한 영향요인 연구: 한국, 홍콩, 미국을 중심으로

Study on the Influence Factors on Middle school student of Scientific Interest: between Korea, Hong Kong, and the U.S.

본 연구는 한국, 홍콩, 미국 세 국가를 중심으로 과학에 대한 흥미에 영향을 미치 는 요인을 분석하여 한국 학생들의 과학에 대한 흥미를 높이기 위한 정책적 함의를 마련하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 TIMSS 2015 8학년 과학 검사 및 교사 학교 환경에 대한 설문을 다층모형(multi-level model)을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 세 국 가에서 공통적으로 과학의 자신감, 과학에 대한 가치 인식이 높을수록 과학에 대한 흥미가 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 과학 과제가 많다고 인식할수록 홍콩은 과학에 대한 흥미가 높아지는 반면, 한국과 미국은 과학에 대한 흥미가 떨어졌으며, 특히 한국의 경우 총 수업시간이 많아질수록 과학의 흥미가 떨어짐을 확인하였다. 이와 같이 한국, 홍콩, 미국 세 국가를 중심으로 비교 분석한 연구결과에 기초하여 한국 학생의 과학에 대한 흥미를 높이기 위한 교사 차원, 학교 차원 나아가 국가 차 원의 정책적 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다.

This study analyzed the influence factors on interests in science focusing on three countries: Korea, Hong Kong and the U.S. This was intended to have policy implications for increasing interests in science and raising awareness among Korean students. To achieve this, the surveys on scientific investigation and school environment for eighth graders by TIMSS(Trends in International Math and Science Study) 2015 were analyzed by using the multi-level model. As a result, it appeared in common among three countries that the higher the confidence in science and the perception of value of science, the higher the interests in science. However, the more it was recognized that there were a lot of science homework, the more the interests in science became in Hong Kong, whereas the interests in science dropped in Korea and the U.S., and especially in Korea, the more the school hour was, the interests in science dropped. Additionally, in Korea, as we had more science teachers, students’ interests in science dropped. Based on such findings, this study provided policy suggestions for increasing interests in science among students at teacher, school, and national levels.
