근대 장애예술가의 조망과 의의

The discovery and introduction of modern disabled artists

세계적으로 유명한 예술가 가운데에는 장애를 가진 인물들이 의외로 많았다. 물론 우리나라에도 장애예술가들이 역사적으로 상당히 많았다. 조선시대엔 문인, 화가, 음악 등 많은 장애예술가들이 계속해서 출현했고, 근대에도 필자가 발굴해낸 인물만 해도 무려 13명 가량이나 되었다. 특히 근대 장애예술가 중에는 유독 그 이름 앞에 ‘최초’나 ‘최고’라는 수식어가 붙은 경우가 많았다. 그만큼 당시 장애예술 가의 활동이 선구적이고 뛰어났던 것이다. 그럼에도 지금까지 근대 장애예술가에 대해 본격적으로 연구된 적은 전혀 없었 다. 이에 본고에서는 그들의 출현배경, 즉 근대 장애인의 삶과 사회적 처지를 간략히 파악한 뒤, 필자가 새롭게 발굴해낸 근대 장애예술가들을 작가와 화가, 음악가 등으로 나누어 차례대로 살펴보았다. 특히 본고에서는 근대 장애예술가를 최대한 발굴하여 그들의 예술가로서의 성장과정과 예술적 성취를 소개했다. 그런 다음 끝으로 근대 장애예술가의 특징과 의의를 종합적으로 지적하는 것으로 결론을 대신 했다. 근대 장애예술가들은 어린 시절에 입은 장애에도 불구하고 피나는 노력으로 문학, 미술, 음악 등 다양한 예술 분야로 진출했으며, 이후 암울한 시대상황 속에서 예술 활동을 통해 세상과 소통하고 사회적 자아를 실현코자 했다.

There were many people with disabilities among the world-famous artists. Of course, there were many disabled artists in our country. During the Joseon Dynasty, there were appeared many disabled artists, such as writer, painter, musician, and so on, and I found that there were about fifteen disabled artists in modern history. Especially, disabled artists in modern history were often labeled the first or the best modifier. It means that activities of modern disabled artists were pioneering and excellent in those days. Nevertheless, no one had studied modern disabled artists in earnest. So I found out their background of appearance, the lives of modern disabled artists and social situation in this paper. And I divided the modern disabled artists into writer, painter, musician and other characters, and I have studied them in order. Above all, this study is to the first to attempt to research the modern disabled artists. Therefore, I have progressed discussion in the way that I have outlined and introducing faithfully their lives and achievement, after searching for a lot of the people involved. And then I substituted for conclusion by pointing out a comprehensive features and their meaning of modern disabled artists. Despite the disorder in childhood, the modern disabled artists entered various pieces of arts, such as literature, painting, music, film, story and so on. And then, through the work of arts in gloomy society, they tried to communicated with the world and turn the social self-realization. Thus we need to remember not only a famous disabled artists in the West but also the modern disabled artists of our country.
