The shape of charge of Gyeonyeo and Daeyeo for a national funeral in Joseon Dynasty

The King s household was the symbol of the country as well as the root of the political power in Joseon. The ceremonies of the King s household were the model to the people. Because it accompanied on the level of a country, it had very important effect upon the people s ceremony. The politician at that time felt to need to establish the principle of the ceremony on the basis of their political ideology. They published 『Gukjooryeui』 totally arranging the formal ceremonies through a series of the process in Joseon. Because the various ceremonies of the King s household were not simple, Dogam was arranged their process and items, etc on the level of a country. Dogam made a Uigwe on the basis of Deungnok after finishing that ceremony; in case of Gukjang, it made a Gukjangdogamuigwe. It took a part of a kind of guidebook that pointed out the standard of national funeral at that time. The ceremonies of the King s household had a special feature of the fixed form, but it showed the change a little as it goes. So I used it as the reference in this paper. Because Jaegung was the coffin that carried the dead of the king in Joseon, the Gyeonyeo and the Daeyeo were the chief supplies for the funeral among them. The starting of a funeral procession was able to be equal for the king to go in and out the Palace in his lifetime. The Gukjangdogam was concerned about them. Gukjangdogam had discussed his principle and moral obligation in considering the social circumstances at that time in making the Gyeonyeo and the Daeyeo. He made various supplies for a funeral on the basis of keeping his principle in compromising the social circumstances in a degree. There was a little change in making the Gyeonyeo and the Daeyeo: kinds of materials, quantities, length, painting, carrier, etc. But they didn t change the fundamental form and structure, decorations, as the carrier for a funeral.
