Does Strategic Orientation of SMEs Affect Their Export Performance?: Evidence from Gwangju and Jeonnam Provinces in South Korea

This study analyzed the degree to which strategic orientation of enterprises influences an export performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using actual proof. Strategic orientation in this sense means setting targets in terms of export, innovation and relationship orientation. Results from 206 export-oriented SMEs in the Gwangju and Jeonnam Provinces in South Korea to whom questionnaires were directed can be summarized as follows. First, the higher the export orientation is, the more positive the influence on the export performance of the SMEs. Second, the higher the degree of innovation orientation of the enterprises is, the more positive the export performance. Third, the higher the degree of relationship orientation of the enterprises is, the more positive the export performance. In fact, these results of analysis tend to coincide with the outputs of previous analysis. However, the scope of former studies were broader compared to the fact that this study was approached from one perspective, strategic orientation. By not contemplating financial performance of the enterprises in the short run but connecting this instead with non-financial performance in the long run, results suggest that there are various capabilities that have to be considered in the case of SMEs in selected provinces in South Korea.
