Lately, teachers and the local offices of Education have been showing an increased interest in factors and solutions for underachievers in elementary English classes. This year, Gyeonggi office of Education started a new program called 365 tutoring program for alienated and underachieving students. Moreover, teachers in local schools have been making lots of effort for help underachievers. This study, a cultural understanding class model for underachievers is along the same line. The purpose of this study is to examine the development of a cultural understanding class model for underachievers in elementary English and its application to an after school English program. It should be noted that this study was conducted on 10 underachieving students and with limited conditions. However, the two kinds of cultural understanding models and some other ideas which are based on Moran s cultural experimental learning model can be adapted for intermediate and advanced students in virtually every case.
