An Essay on Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributaries, An Ethnography of Qing China in the 18th Century

皇清職貢圖 는 1751년 乾隆帝(재위 1736-1795)의 명에 의해 제작된 視覺 的 民族誌이다. 건륭제는 1751년에 전국의 總督과 巡撫들에게 명하여 청 제국 내에 거주하는 민족들 및 유럽을 포함하여 청나라와 외교 관계를 맺고 있는 세계 각국 사람들의 외모를 그림으로 그리고 이들에 관한 설명을 붙이게 했다. 황청직공도 는 청나라와 외교 관계를 맺고 있는 국가들의 37개 민족들과 청나라의 통치하에 있는 264개 소수민족들의 모습을 그린 총 301개 圖像과 그 그림들에 관한 설명으로 이루어졌다. 대부분의 그림들은 민족 고유 의상을 입은 한쌍의 남녀를 묘사한다. 그림 속 인물들은 그들의 독특한 문화관습을 보여주는 문화상징물들과 함께 등장한다. 그림의 상단에는 그림 속에 묘사된 민족의 역사와 살고 있는 지역, 음식과 복식, 독특한 풍속과 기호 및 취향, 토산품 그리고 청나 라와의 관계 등에 관한 설명이 만주어와 중국어로 적혀 있다. 건륭제가 황청직공도 의 제작을 명한 것은 광활한 영토에 분포되어 있는 다양한 민족들이 청나라 정부의 통치하에 하나로 통일되었음을 과시하기 위함이었 다. 職貢圖는 왕조의 통치가 강성함을 상징한다. 강대해진 국력을 과시하기 위한 영토의 확장과 민족 화합의 기록이며 상징이라고 할 수 있다

Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributaries is a visual ethnography which was made in 1751 by the order of Emperor Qianlong. The book was an ethnography for which Emperor Qianlong issued a royal command to governors and imperial inspectors of all across the country in 1751 to paint the appearances of ethnic groups who resided within the territory of Qing Empire and of peoples from countries over the world including Europe which established diplomatic relations with Qing China and to add explanatory notes about them. Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributaries is composed of 301 images and explanatory notes depicting 37 races from countries which established diplomatic relations with Qing China and 264 ethnic minorities under Qing control. Most images depict one pair of male and female figures wearing their native dress. They appear with their cultural symbols showing their unique cultural convention. The images were accompanied by explanatory notes written in Manchu and Chinese about their history, region, food, fashion, custom, taste, local products, and the relations with Qing. The reason why Emperor Qianlong issued an imperial order to compile Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributaries was to show off the political unity accomplished by his effort in the face of ethnic diversity within Qing territory.
