A Critical Reflection on How Korean Catholics Perform Their Faith

한국 가톨릭 신자들은 어떤 방식으로 자신들의 신앙을 표현하고 고백하고 실천하는가? 가톨릭 신자들은 자신의 신앙과 종교에 대해 어떤 생각을 하고 있는가? 이 논문은 가톨릭신문사에서 2016년에 수행한 가톨릭 신자 들의 종교의식과 신앙생활에 대한 설문조사 자료들을 분석하면서 앞의 질문들에 대한 대답을 찾으려 한다. 신앙을 이해한다는 것은 단순히 사람들이 믿는 것을 이해하는 것이 아니라 사람들이 실제로 그들의 신앙을 살아내는 방식을 이해하는 것이다. 신앙이란 믿음과 행동과 태도를 포함하는 실천들이다. 살아있는 신앙이란 개인적, 공동체적, 사회적 차원을 포함하는 것이다. 신앙은 단순히 종교적 차원에서만 수행되는 것이 아니라 사회적 차원에서도 수행되어야 한다. 또한 신앙은 교리적 차원, 전례적 차원, 삶의 차원 안에서 수행되어야 한다. 가톨릭 신자들의 종교적 삶의 모습과 사회적 삶의 모습이 곧 그들의 신앙의 모습을 증거한다. 한국 가톨릭 신자들은 전통적인 방식으로 자신들의 신앙을 수행하고 있다. 주로 전례와 신심행위들을 통해 자신들의 신앙을 수행하고 있다는 뜻이다. 신앙이 사회적 차원으로 확대되지 않고 있다. 교계제도와 전례적 틀 안에서만 수행되는 신앙은 자칫 상투적이고 위선적으로될 위험이 있다. 신앙의 총체성과 공공성에 대한 이해가 절실히 필요하다.

How do Korean Catholics express, confess, and practice their faith? What do Korean Catholics think about their faith and religion? This paper aims to understand the way Korean Catholics perform their faith, using data from the 2016 Catholic Times study of religious consciousness and parish life of Korean Catholics. To understand a faith is not merely to know what people believe, but to know how people live in and live out their faith. Faith is a set of practices composed of patterns of acting, believing, and attitudes. Living faith includes individual, communal, and social dimensions. Faith has to be performed not only in a religious level but also in a social level. Faith has to be expressed, confessed, and practiced in a dogmatic dimension, in a liturgical dimension, and in a life dimension. The religious and social lives of Korean Catholics show what their faith is and means. Korean Catholics still perform their faith in a traditional way. They express, confess, and practice their faith mainly through participating in the liturgies and pious exercises within a parish. Expressing their faith does not extend to a social life. Catholic faith that is performed within a framework of hierarchy and in a liturgical form tends to be conventional and even hypocritical. We need to understand the totality and publicness of our faith.
