A Study about ‘the Object and the Articles of Faith’ of St. Thomas Aquinas and ‘the Church’s Formulation of Its Doctrines’ of Avery Dulles, S.J.

본 연구는 우선, ‘신앙’에 대한 날카로운 신학적 사상을 세상에 내놓은 토마스 아퀴나스의 신학대전 II-II, q.1, aa.1-10에서 제시된 ‘신앙의 대상’ 에 대해서 고찰한다. 첫째 진리요, 신앙의 형상적-질료적 대상이자 신앙의 원인 자체이신 하느님에 대해 집중하고 이어서 교회에 의해 체계화된 신앙의 조항들을 다룬다. 아퀴나스는 신학과 철학과의 조화로운 균형을 맞추 면서 신앙의 대상과 인간 지성의 관계를 파악한다. 즉 인간의 본능에 이미 내적으로 주어진 초자연적인 빛 안에서 신앙을 ‘고찰하고 사색하는 지성적 행위’로 위치시키면서, 인간은 자신의 이성으로써만 판단하는 것보다더 심오하게 ‘결코 기만될 수 없는 신적 진리’에 확신을 가진다는 은총의 법을 설명하는 것이다. 계속해서, 아퀴나스는 신앙의 조항들이 교회의 권위에 의해서 체계적으로 형성되었음을 제시하는데, 이를 바탕으로 본 연구는 ‘교의들은 시대의 변화와 문화적 상황에 따라 제시되는 성경의 다양한 내용들을 모두 함축하고 있으면서도 동시에 하나인 그리스도교 신앙을 어떻게 다양하고도 명백하게 표현하는지’에 대해서 고찰한다. 특별히 애버리 덜레스의 물음 ‘현실의 지금, 다양한 교회들과 공동체들은 저마다의 다른 신앙을 고백하는데, 그렇다면 우리는 보편 교회 안에서 보존되어온 하나의 신앙 고백을 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까?’에 집중하면서 신앙에 대한 주제를 더욱 심화시키는 것이다. 결론적으로 본고는 ‘신앙’과 ‘믿을 교리’ 그리고 ‘보편교회의 권위’에 대한 신학적 완성도를 제시함으로써 ‘교의의 역동 적인 전개’에 대한 이해를 통해서 신앙 문제 자체는 전체 교회와 관련을 맺으면서 이미 사도 시대 때에 형성되고 교회에 의해서 체계화된 신앙의 조항들에 따라서 이해된다는 사상을 더욱 풍요롭게 제공한다.

This study first examines the object of faith presented in Thomas Aquinas’ the Summa Theologiae, II-II, q.1, aa.1-10 which puts the sharpest theological thought of ‘faith’ into the world. And focuses on God as the first truth and the formal-material object. Studies about the articles of faith properly formulated in the authority of the Church. Aquinas grasps the relationship between the object of faith and man’s knowledge maintaining balance and harmony between theology and philosophy. Considering the inner faith as ‘man s intelligent act’ in the light of a supernatural instinct that has already been given to man, explains for the law of Grace that man is more convinced of divine truth, which can never be deceived by his own reason. Based on this, our study deepens ‘how do the doctrines connote and direct all the various contents of the Bible presented according to the changes of the times and the cultural situation, but at the same time express one Christian faith clearly.’ Especially Avery Dulles question, ‘now in reality, the various churches and communities confess each other s faith, so how can we understand a confession of faith that has been preserved in the universal church?’will help our focus and fine a way of our studying. In conclusion, this study understands of ‘dynamic development of doctrines’ presenting the theological thoughts of ‘the authority of the universal church’. The various articles and doctrines of faith are a specific way to guide human beings to accept the divine truth, for this reason the concrete contents of faith continue to be renovated according to the limitations of recognition methods and to human history and cultural and environmental conditions.
