The Influence of Economic Wealth and Technology on Cultural Distance

선행연구는 정보통신기술이 문화에 주는 영향에 대하여 개인주의/집단주의 수준(Individualism/Collectivism), 권력거리(Power Distance), 불확실성차원(Uncertainty Avoidance), 성역할 지향(Gendr role orientation), 장기지행성(Long-Term orientation)을 활용하여 증명하였다(Sang et al., 2013). 그러나 기존의 선행연구는 문화를 독립변수로 하여 문화가 정보통신기술에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구가 주를 이루었다. 예를 들어 Galliers et al.(1998)은 국가문화(national culture)를 독립변수로 하여 국가의 기술채택률(Rate of technology adoption)에 미치는 영향을 단일 사례연구를 통하여 증명하였고 Chui and Kwok(2008), Linghui and Koveos(2008), Fischer and Mansell(2009)는 모두 국가문화와 경제적 부를 독립변수로 하여 생명보험 소비자, 조직 헌신의 형태에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 그러나 본 연구는 선행연구와 다르게 기술과 경제적 발전을 독립변수로 하여 Hofstede의 문화거리에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증분석을 하고자 한다. 또한 선행연구는 불확실성 차원(Uncertainty avoidance)과 경제적 부와의 상관관계가 부(-)의 관계인지 정(+)의 관계인지에 대한 명확한 정의를 내리고 있지 않다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 선행연구에서 증명하지 못한 경제적 부와 기술이 문화에 미치는 영향과 불확실성 차원과의 정(+), 부(-)의 관계에 대한 보다 실증적인 증거를 제시하고자 하는 데에 본 연구의 목적이 있다. 연구결과 기술의 발전은 개인주의문화에 t-value=0.47*** 정(+)의 관계, 권력거리는 t-value= -0.60***부(-)의 관계, 불확실성은 t-value= -0.24*로 부(-)의 유의한 관계를 보이고 있다. 따라서 기술의 발전이 불확실성 차원을 감소시키는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 기술과 경제적 부와의 관계를 분석한 결과 기술은 불확실성과 부(-)의 유의미한 관계를 기지고 있고, 경제적 부는 정(+)의 유의미한 결과를 보이고 있음을 증명하였다. 이러한 결과는 기술의 발전이 미래의 불확실성을 감소시키는 반면 경제적 부는 불확실성이 다시 증가한다는 결과임을 주목하여야 한다.

Prior studies have examined the influence of information and communication technology on culture by comparing individualism / collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, gender role orientation, (Long-Term orientation) (Sang et al., 2013). However, previous studies have focused on the effects of culture on information and communication technology with culture as an independent variable. For example, Galliers et al., (1998) demonstrated a single case study of the effects of national culture on the rate of technology adoption, using Chui and Kwok (2008) Linghui and Koveos (2008) and Fischer and Mansell (2009) conducted a study on the form of life insurance consumer and organizational commitment, with national culture and economic wealth as independent variables. However, this study attempts to empirically analyze the effect of Hofstede on the cultural distance, using technology and economic development as independent variables. Also, previous studies do not provide a clear definition of whether the correlation between uncertainty avoidance and economic wealth is accurately negative or positive. Therefore, this study intends to present more empirical evidence on the relationship between positive (+) and negative (-) relationships between the effects of economic wealth and technology on culture and the level of uncertainty, The purpose of. The development of the research technology is related to the relationship of individualism culture with t-vlaue = 0.47 *** positive (+), power distance with t-value = -0.60 *** (-), uncertainty with t-value = -0.24 * (-), and the development of technology reduces the level of uncertainty. In addition, the analysis of the relationship between technology and economic wealth shows that technology has a meaningful relationship between uncertainty and wealth, and economic wealth has positive (+) meaning. This result should be noted that if the development of technology reduces future uncertainty, the economic wealth is a result of increasing uncertainty over time.
