Socialism and Statistics : A research note

이 글은 년대 중후반 1920 사회주의 잡지 『조선지광』을 대상으로 식민지 조선에서 사회주의와 통계의 관련성을 검토하였다. 2장에서는 1920년대 초중반 식민지 조선에서 통계와 수리적 사고가 널리 확산되었음을 살펴보았다. 3장에서는 1920년대 중후반 『조선지광』을 대상으로 과학성의 근거로서 맑스주의의 이론의 위치를 살폈고, 이론이 분석 대상으로서 조선에 대한 지식을 요청하였고, 이 지점이 『조선지광』이 통계를 요청하는 장소(topos)임을 밝혔다. 4장에서는 구체적으로 『조선지광』의 필자들이 ① 통계를 통해 수행한 담론적 실천을 분석하였다. 식민지 사회주의자들은 통계를 통한 대항해석에 가장 힘주어 담론적 실천을 수행하고자 하였다. 하지만 식민지 주체에게 통계라는 지식에 대한 접근은 제한이 있었으며, 그 결과 『조선지광』에서는 ② 숫자의 인용, ③ 통계의 비해석적 전재(轉載), ④ 지식의 모집 등의 형태의 실천 또한 발견할 수 있었다. 이 글에서 파악한 논점을 경유하여, 식민지 조선에서 사회주의와 통계의 관계를 새롭게 읽어내는 것은 추후의 과제로 삼고자 한다.

I examined relationship between socialism and statistics in colonial Korea reading ChoseonChiKwnag(The Light of Choseon), the socialist magazine. In Chapter 2, I examined the widespread use of statistics and mathematical thinking in colonial Korea during the early and mid-1920s. In Chapter 3, I examined the position of Marxist theory as the basis of scientific characteristic in the middle and late 1920s, and the colonial intellectuals, a subject of analysis, asked for knowledge about Choseon. In Chapter 4, I analyzed discourse practices through statistics by the writers of ChoseonChiKwnag(The Light of Choseon). ① Colonial socialists tried to do the discourse practice to make a counter interpretation through statistics. However, the access to the knowledge of statistics was limited to colonial subjects. The writers of ChoseonChiKwnag(The Light of Choseon), therefore, made a discourse practice of ② quotation of numbers, ③ uninterpreated reprinting of statistics, and ④invitation of knowledge. Through the points discussed in this article, I intend to make it a future task to newly read the relationship between socialism and statistics in colonial Korea.
