Accessibility Situation of Medical Clinics in Seowon-gu, Choengju, from Perspectives of Persons with Visual Impairments

This study was aimed to examine accessibility situation of medical clinics located in Seowon-gu, Cheongju, in order to provide information for improvement of current situation and for future medical institution planning and design. From April 24, 2015, to May 18, 2017, accessibility situation of 52 medical clinics were evaluated based on a checklist generated by the researchers. Among 134 items evaluated, 65 items (48.5%) showed satisfaction ratio 70 percent or above and 42 items (31.3%) showed satisfaction ratio lower than 30 percents. (2) Accessibility items associated with major building structures such as width of hallways or level difference showed relatively greater satisfactory levels while items that could be improved with minor costs and efforts showed lower satisfactory levels. (3) Among nine categories, access route category showed the best accessibility situation to have the highest ratio of items with satisfactory levels 70 percents or above, and the lowest ratio of items with satisfactory levels below 30 percents; while exterior staircase category was found to have the worst accessibility situations showing opposite situations. Based on the findings, implications were suggested for improvements of accessibility of medical clinics from policy makers , facility owners and users standpoints.
