A Study of Death Images Expressed in Contemporary Fashion

The purpose of this study was to declare the means and expression of death as a theme of fashion design based on categorization of the expression of death images in contemporary fashion. For the methods of this study, literature research and collection analysis were carried out. In case of collection analysis, collection reviews and photos in professional fashion web sites were utilized. The objects were 2000∼2015 womenswear RTW and haute couture collections, a total of 29 collections associated with death. From the explanations of total collection in reviews, the key-words associated with death were analyzed and classified according to the common characteristics, finally death images were divide into external and internal expression. Physical death as the external expression of death, was appeared as stimulating materials with red color and pattern like blood, bone, and skull. Spiritual expression represent a death pathos through a dark mood of show with ghost image and a funereal atmosphere. Spacial expression of death was expressed as the chilly staging, dark and strong colors, unique make up and hair style of models. In the fear and anxiety as a internal expression, the mood and stage management of show, make up, silhouette, hair dress hide face and head, and dark color were appeared in common. Disgust and horror were appeared with odd and grotesque form and make up to give strong visual effects.
