『治平要覽』은 朝鮮王朝 世宗 23년(1441)에서 27년(1445)까지 4년간의 편찬과정을 거쳐 완성된 150권의 史書이다. 중국 周代로부터 元代까지의 역사기록을 수록하는 동시에 비록 단편적이지만 國史를 수록하고 있다. 이 史書의 특징은 그 書名으로부터 알 수 있듯이, 治世의 요점을 일람하기 위한 목적으로 편찬된 일종의 역사평론서이자 정치교과서의 성격을 띠고 있다. 즉, 史實을 고증하거나 새로운 사료를 발굴한 史書라기보다는, 압축된 역사적 경험으로부터 정치적 성패와 흥망의 원인을 유교적 관점에서 재구성하고 정리한 史論書라고 말할 수 있다.
The Abridged version for fair Governance(治平要覽, 1445), which was compiled by 150-volume in Se-jong of Chosun dynasty, is a history book for looking at the rise and fall of past kingdoms in China and Korea. King Se-jong of Chosun dynasty wanted to acquire political lessons from past history of China and korea, and at the same time he tried to leave a core of Confucian politics to his descendants. The Abridged version for fair Governance contains the record of ancient chinese history from Zhou dynasty to Mogol empire, and Korean history from Gija(箕子) Chosun to Goryo. At the same time, a large numbers of historical essays and assessments, written by confucians in Song dynasty, were included in this book. Chosun dynasty set importance on historical experiences of Song Dynasty from the beginning to the end, because there were a lot of similarities and a common system in the two dynasties. The Abridged version for fair Governance is also like a political textbook or guide book provided for king s rule. and mainly adopted a principle that was reflected by Confucius s The spring and Autumn Annals(春秋) with a view of Confucianism.
