‘꽃보다 봉사’ 어린이집 봉사학습에 참여한 장애 및 비장애 초등학생과 유아의 경험과 성장에 관한 질적연구

A Qualitative Inquiry on the Effects of Participation in ‘Better-than-Flowers’ Service-Learning on Elementary Students with and without Disabilities and Preschoolers

본 연구의 목적은 초등 통합교육 환경에서 동아리 활동으로 직접 봉사학습, ‘꽃보다 봉사’ 프로그램을 개발하고 실행한 후 참여 학생들과 유아들의 변화를 질적연구로 알아보는 것이다. 참여 학생들은 서울 소재 A초등학교 5학년 학생들로 ‘꽃보다 봉사’ 동아리에 자원한 장애학생 2명과 비장애학생 9명이 다. 봉사학습은 지역사회 내 S어린이집에서 실시되었으며 5학년 1학기의 교육과정과 학습목표를 분석하 여 주제를 선정하고, 활동은 어린이집의 유아들과 함께 할 수 활동으로 구성하여, 주 1회, 총 10회기가 진행되었다. 유아들을 돌보는 봉사학습을 한 초등학생들과 돌봄을 받은 어린이집 유아들이 어떠한 경험 과 변화가 있었는지를 알아보기 위해 매 회기 학생들이 기록한 일지와 참여교사들이 작성한 관찰일지, 학생들과 참여교사들의 소집단 심층면담을 통해 수집된 질적자료를 연속적 비교분석법으로 분석하는데 연구자간 및 자료간 삼각검증과 참여자 확인 절차를 거쳐 분석 결과의 신뢰도를 높였다. 분석 결과 비장애학생의 성장과 변화, 장애학생의 성장과 변화, 유아의 성장과 발달 촉진이라는 3가지 주제영역과 13가 지 하위 주제들이 추출되었다. 비장애학생들의 경우, 유아들을 돌보는 과정에서 자신감과 이타심, 진로 탐색 및 장애학생들에 대한 새로운 긍정적 인식의 변화에 대한 주제가 나타났다. 장애학생들은 봉사자로 서의 성공적 수행 경험과 자신감 및 자기조절력의 증가, 비장애학생들과의 다양한 상호작용, 학교생활의 새로운 즐거움을 경험한 것으로 주제가 나왔다. 유아들은 초등학생 언니․오빠들의 행동과 구어를 모방 하며 친사회적 행동과 활동 참여가 높아지는 등의 긍정적 변화가 나타났다. 본 연구는 초등 통합교육 환 경에서 학교교육과정과 연계하여 개발된 직접 봉사학습 프로그램의 교육적 효과를 참여 장애학생 및 비 장애학생과 유아를 통해 밝혔다는 점과 지역사회로 봉사학습의 영역을 확장하였다는데 그 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study was to develop a service-learning program as one of elementary students’ club activities that require direct services at a daycare center nearby the school, to implement the program and to find out the effects of participation in service-learning on students and preschoolers via a qualitative inquiry. The participants were 11 students and 20 preschoolers and teachers and assistants. The service-learning program, called as ‘Better-than-Flowers,’ visiting S daycare center and doing various activities together as ‘elder sisters and brothers from the school’ was carried out 10 sessions on every Friday for one semester with each session for 90 minutes. Qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews, participant observations and students’ journals. Constant comparative analysis was conducted to analyze the data and for validity and reliability of analyses member check and triangulation were applied. As results of this study, three area of main themes and 13 subsequent themes were derived. Overally, effects of participation in daycare center service-learning were positive on elementary students with and without disabilities and preschoolers. Several distinguished aspects of ‘Better-than-Flowers’ service-learning were discussed in terms of social-emotional growth of the participants and enhancing curricular and social inclusion among students with and without disabilities.
