A Comparative Study on the Diamond Sutra’s Translation of Reasoning Connector ‘何以故’ to Korean and English

This study aims at studying Diamond Sutra and its translations. Diamond Sutra is one of the most influential Buddhist teachings to reach nirvana, the perfection of wisdom. When the standard translation of Diamond Sutra in Korean was completed by Korean Buddhism headquarter in 2009, the comparative analysis on the Diamond Sutra with different languages-the Chinese, the Korean, and the English translation are available. This study will compare the negation logic and the reasoning connectors in Chinese translation of 何以故 with those of Korean translation and English versions. Interestingly Diamond Sutra in the Chinese transition is composed of 275 sentences, but Korean has 289, and English has 546 sentences, which is a technical device to achieve the dynamic equivalence in Nida’s sense between the low context languages and high context ones. Of those 50 negation structures found in the Diamond Sutra, 何以故 is used 39 times to provide the reasons for negation in Chinese; Korean translation contains 35 counterparts and similar other expressions; English translation shows more diverse counter expressions, which also verifies how culture is incorporated in the process of translation.
