A Study on Transition of Buddhist Sutra Translation

This research focuses on examining the history and transition of Buddhist sutra translation. Its intention comes from the fact that its analytical data on the transitional process of Buddhist sutra translation were not sufficient. So, this research tried to find how Buddhist sutra introduced to Korea and what processes it has gone through from the past to today. The Buddhist sutra has a variety of types and contents. It is actually divided by Five or Ten Taxonomy. It means that the Buddhist sutra like other religion books has systemicity and formality. And the Buddhist sutra includes diverse characteristics in terms of its formation process, its translational history, and four meetings for writing sutra. About its formation process, it was made by monks’ a lot of meetings and discussions for a long time. It implies that translators need to know the background knowledge about the Buddhist sutra because translation is related to the second information or theme knowledge. Therefore, this research is expected to be helpful for better translation through the history and transition of the Buddhist sutra.
