The aim of this study is to develop and establish an annotation scheme of learner corpus of English for Special Purposes (ESP, Weber, 2001) with a view to investigating literal translation errors in letters of application. Data for the corpus include 40 letters of application written by undergraduate freshmen in a university located in Daegu, South Korea. It particularly concentrates on the specification of collocation errors and genre errors. The most frequent genre errors include omission of opening, polite ending, and signing off (Henry & Roseberry, 2001 p.159), which evidenced the need to incorporate the annotations in the corpus and concentrate on teaching the genre norms in class. It also revealed four types of frequent literal translation errors influenced by the learners’ mother tongue: verb choice errors, pragmatic errors, syntax transfer errors, and collocation errors.
