This study examines the relations between language proficiency, grit, and self-efficacy among high school students. The data were pooled from a total of 203 1st year high school students from an Incheon area using two types of survey on grit and self-efficacy. Exploratory factor analysis(EFA) was applied to validate those surveys. Thereafter, the data were analyzed by means of Pearson s correlation coefficients, ordinal logistic regressions, and multiple and hierarchical regression analysis. Results suggest that EFA produced one factor for grit, which was named grit, and three factors for self-efficacy: self-confidence, self-control, and task preference. Grit and the other three factors of self-efficacy were positively correlated with language proficiency. In addition, grit and self-confidence alone predicted both students’ language proficiency test scores and grades. It was further found that students’ grit played a role as a complete or a partial mediator between language proficiency and three sub-scales of self-efficacy. More pedagogical implications are highlighted.
