Meaning of the documents related to the Korea and Korean identified in the censorship document issued by the Police Dept. of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication

Unlike the colonial Korea, Japan had continued to censor ideas and customs on its citizens through publication laws and publication ordinances after Meiji Restoration (1868). The censored document, List of the prohibited publications, which shall be covered in this research, is a record of the prohibited materials against publishing arranged from 1898 to 1944 in the Police Dept. of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The records of the administrative disposition after censorship for the publications published by Japan in Japan was included as a table of contents in this record, among which the contents related to Korea and Korean were found quite a lot. As a result of this research, in case of the publications related to the Korea and Korean included in this table of contents, it was identified that mainly the resistant books and newspapers related to the protection of the national sovereignty of Korea, and the publications related to the Declaration of Independence raised in 2.8(Feb 08) and 3.1(Mar 01) were prohibited from 1898 to 1919. In addition, in the table of list from late 1930s to 1944, it is identified that the books related to the religion of Jehovah s Witnesses were intensively prohibited for publication. This is a different aspect from the matter that the single books related to the Korea and Korean included in the List of the prohibited single-bookspublished by the Police Dept. of Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in similar time were prohibited publication intensively mainly for the books related to the communistic movement and history. Based on the results of this research, this article plans to examine Published newsletter of police contradistinctively, which is another censorship document, in the future.
