This paper aims to explore the new character factors that can practically help preventing or resolving school violence incidents in terms of virtues and competencies by focusing on character education that can be a countermeasure against school violence problem that has become increasingly serious in recents days, while criticizing the old-fashioned character education that has not so far functioned as proper and effective countermeasure against school violence. This paper positively evaluates the fruits of recent studies on character education that have embodied the core virtues and competencies to be cultivated through character education and have proposed them as the contents and methods of character education. This paper presents self-esteem, sympathy and caring, forgiveness, and anger-control as the most core virtues and competencies of students’ character, after considering what kinds of virtues and competencies for offenders and victims of school violence are needed, and what kinds of resolution for school violence incidents are effective and satisfied. When the students could be able to increase their self-esteem, to learn to care for and sympathize with others, to cherish a feeling of forgiveness, and to get the ability to control their anger through the proper character education at school, it could lead to meaningful effects in preventing school violence.
