The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of ownership structure of Chinese firm on firm-level productivity. Exploiting Non-listed Enterprise Data from 1998-2007, provided by National Bureau of Statistics of China, this paper sheds light on the relationship between ownership and productivity in Chinese firms. The empirical results indicate that the productivity of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) is lower by 12-27% than other firms. This lower productivity of SOEs mainly results from the over-investment by local governments that have imprudently raised local industries to secure local budget.
