Purpose: This study was done to explore the predictors of depression for the elderly. Method: Data were collected from elderly(65 and older) using structured questionnaires taken from March to November 2007. Descriptive statistics, X2 test, t-test, and ordinal logistic regression were used in data analysis using SPSS WIN 14.0 version. Results: The prevalence of depression (Geriatric Depression Score(GDS-15) >5) was 66.4%. There was a significant difference between elderly who were depressed and those who were not depressed based on economy status, perceived health status and self-efficacy. Age, perceived health status and self-efficacy were important predictors of depression for the elderly in residential communities. Conclusion: These results show that Korean elderly in residential communities experience elevated levels of depression. A program that focused on improving perceived heath status and self-efficacy is necessary for the elderly in residential communities.
