New twelve low molecular weight compounds were prepared and their thermal and liquid crystal properties were studied by the differential scanning calirimetry (DSC) and on a hot-stage of a polarizing microscope. Liquid crystalline materials comprised of bis (o-,m-,p-halogenophenyl)terephthalates)terephthalates are useful in electro- optical elements. The compounds of m-Cl and p-Cl were enantiotropic nematic phase. The compound of p- Br was monotropically nematic. In contrast, the compounds of o-F, o-Cl, o-Brl, m-F, m-Br, m-I, p-F and p-l were not liquid crystals.
