Two series of new thermotropic compounds whose mesogens are of aromatic ester or amide type having a terminal substituent at the para position of each terminal rings were prepared and their liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and on a cross polarizing microscope. A thermodynamic analysis of the phase transitions of the compounds was made and the results are explained in relation to their structure.
