The KCI and KBC 2005 Codes require the control of flexural cracking in reinforced concrete structures. Nowadays, concrete cover is thicker than the past days because of durability of the structures. However, current requirement of Korean code provisions are based on the statistical equation presented by Gergely and Lutz. It is based strictly on their experimental results, it become unworkable with the thick covers. This paper investigates the development of the crack control provisions in domestic and foreign countries and the crack width equation on which those provisions are based, explores the use of the crack width equation for the calculation of large covers. The purpose of this paper proposes a new formulation of the equation for calculating crack width that is proper to thin and thick concrete covers.
