A bacterium secreting a protease was screened from soil around Hoseo University by methods of casein hydrolysis. The strain was Gram (+), rod-shaped, catalase(+), starch hydrolysis(-)， VP test(+), The strain was identified to be Bacillus pumilus through MIDI system analysis and named B. pumilus A4. The strain s growth and protease activity showed similar kinetics at 30 and 37 °C. The protease was optimal at pH 9 and 40°C, and showed some activity at weak alkaline pH.
