Couple-based Psychosocial Intervention Program Development for Breast Cancer Patients and Their Partners: A Preliminary Study

Although women’s breast cancer affects both women and their partners, as well as their relationships, few interventions have been developed to work with couples confronting breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to provide a solid basis for developing psychosocial intervention programs for breast cancer patients and their partners that teaches couples how to minimize negative effects and maximize positive functioning during their difficult time. For the purpose, we explored the psychosocial distress, needs, vulnerability of breast cancer patients and their partners and reviewed psychosocial intervention programs for enhancing the marital relationship in the context of breast cancer. Based on the review, several practice guidelines are provided for developing programs for breast cancer patients and their partners in marital context. The suggestions for future research were also discussed.
