Modern society can be called as a rapidly changing society due to diverse knowledge and information. In this surrounding, an active information processing and learning method is essential. Also the importance of self- directed learning is emphasized to have an active life. This study aims to improve the quality of life by resolving the academic burden of university students through the education of entrance exam, and also helps in being an adult learner by offering the suitable lifelong learning program. The research data were collected and analyzed 44 doctoral dissertation, articles in journal, reports etc and research trends. The findings of this study influence on the self-efficacy of students, problem solving skills, academic achievement, and career preparation. On the other hand, the research on self-directed learning lacks the variety of factors, but mostly on advance research on academic. Research on various factors and development of on-line web-based programs is essential. Also this study suggests the need for differentiated program of self-directed learning and academic context for the learner.
