A Study on the Principles of Self-Disclosure Speech Communication

The purpose of this study is to provide principles and detailed guidelines for effective ways of self-disclosure speech communication. This paper is based on the general speech principles and the empirical data analysis through a survey of university students’ experience on self-disclosure speech communication. The self-disclosure speech occurs throughout an individual s whole life-time, and this speech affects a person’s life in a negative or a positive way. For the effective ways of self-disclosure speech communication to bring positive consequences, this study suggests the following principles-the principle of m utual consideration, the principle of expression and the principle of understanding -and detailed guidelines to practice the three principles. Through the whole process of self-disclosure speech communication, the three principles interact in an integrated way. As long as both speaker and listener are considerate of each other, express their ideas precisely, and understand each other’s messages, both can experience m utual growth and achieve the purpose of communication without victim izing one another. As a practical study of Korean language which aims to contribute to the enhancement of effective communication, this study approaches the personal concept of self-disclosure’ as a concept of Korean language studies, expanding the horizon of the studies.
