This paper examines the problem of interactive balance of rational thinking and literary feeling in the mind of the modem man, focusing on Ian McEwan s major novels- Enduring Love, Atonement, and Saturday. It discusses the ways by which McEwan explores the confused and complex process of human mind in his novels. Enduring Love deals with the pathological aspects of the excessive love and the rational way of thinking. Atonement is about the story of a novelist s difficulty in representing the imaginative work of literature in which she finds a way to atone for irreparable reality. Saturday explores different ways of knowing and the value of literature as an alternative way to scientific way of rational thinking. In consideration of McEwan s three major novels, it can be concluded that only when the rational thinking and literary feeling is harmonized, the balanced vision of life can be achieved.
